The F word are you Confused over generations ?
Then your not alone, it would seem even breeders are confused, my understanding is :
The F means Filial ( pertaining to, a generation)
F1 is a Labrador x Poodle
F1B is a Labradoodle x Poodle, this is called back crossing.
This is done to try to stamp the Poodle non moulting coat.
F2 is a second generation Labradoodle.
Labradoodle x Labradoodle
F2B is a Labradoodle F1 x Labradoodle F1B
F3 is F2 x F2
People seem to have varying opinions as to how the generations are added together but IMO If you mate back towards a Poodle the offspring should only move on 1 generation from the lowest, for example :-
F2 x F1 = F2
F2 x F2 = F3
F3 x F1 = F2
F3 x F3 = F4
Have you often wondered like me why there is such a variation in coat length of our Labradoodles??
There are 3 genotype that determine coat length and it has long since been known that certain short coat breeds carry the Long coat gene, ie Rottwieler, Weimaraner, Chihuahuas.
It has recently been discovered that this gene is also present in a significant number of the Labrador population as well, hence the variation in F1s.
You can now have your Labs DNA tested to see if they carry the gene, very useful if you are breeding F1s
